Volunteers interpret marine life exhibits for aquarium visitors

Volunteer

You can make a meaningful contribution to the experience of visitors, and in your life, as a volunteer for Birch Aquarium at Scripps. As the public center for world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, more than 410,000 people visit Birch Aquarium at Scripps each year and engage in exhibits, public programs and special events.

Our volunteers are a community of people comprised of all ages, backgrounds and professional and student expertise. As a volunteer, you support the mission in a variety of ways, which include:
  • Interpreting Scripps research by answering visitor questions about live animals and interactive science exhibits
  • Providing ocean science education as docents, education assistants and tide-pool presenters
  • Promoting ocean conservation by encouraging stewardship for the environment

Requirements

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and able to commit to working three to four 4-hour shifts a month for a period of at least six months. We do not have any short-term or single-opportunity volunteer positions. We are open from 9am to 5pm seven days a week, and most shifts are 9am-1pm or 1-5pm. Please note that all volunteer and internship positions are unpaid.

How do I get started?

You can submit an application online.

When do I start?

After we receive your application, we will contact you to attend a volunteer orientation if your skills and availability match our openings. The remaining orientations this year are in August and November. After the orientation you will interview for a position, and how quickly you will be able to start depends on the openings we have and how your interests and availability match these openings.
